Back to my place

Here is a poem of Rabindranath Tagore!
I remember I translated one of his poems and sent it to a magazine when I was a child!
It was never published!
Who am I to translate Tagore?
It is not about my transaltion!
It is about the way the poem touched me!

Madhyahna
(Only The ending Lines)

In the midst of all these
I am a stranger
Yet I do not feel estranged
I feel I am one of them
It also seems
After a long time
I have returned
To my own native place
I have gone back in time
To my former life
To that fresh morning
When like an infant
Clinging on to its mother's breast
I was inseparably mixed
With land, air, water and the sky
And along with all living beings
That thrive on this earth
I was joyously sucking
The elixir of my first existence.’

Tanguturi Surya Kumari - Songs

I heard these songs in my childhood.
We as a generation were so enamoured by these songs and themes.
Patriotism is a much forgotten theme now!
The song "Ettavoyi nee Jayajenda" evokes some rare feeling in me even today!
You are free to think I am old fashioned!
But listen to the song and the mood!
It is better than a Marching Song!

I bring her some songs of Smt Tanguturi Surya Kumari, a legendary singer of yester years!

Download a bunch of songs including "Maa Telugu Talliki Mallepoodanda" from here!

Let us enjoy some great songs!

Page from the Diary

Here is another page from my diary.

I made it a point to write on the thoughts occured on that day and not exactly the happenings!

The thoughts might have occured because of some happenings!

You will not even find names in my diary usually!

The physical power surrenders before the might of mental power. In the mental power there is a stunning character. One fellow brought down a palm tree with a hit of his sword. Another one brought this man down without as much lifting his hand. In such a situation, the later is supposed to be more sronger!

Jared Diamond of the "Guns, Germs nad Steel" fame, tells a different story! Intelligent people in the forests remained in the forests. The less intelligent civilised folks could rule over them. How was it possible? One is training and the other the milieu in which people live. The theory and the causes are fit to be discussed at a very high level.

One who studies the life is superior to the one who studies only books. There was a story in which a philosopher becomes a fool before an oil monger. I am reminded of it!

May be I tell the story here for the benefit of those who do not know it!

This philosopher went to the oil monger to buy some oil. there was an ox working the oil mill. the master was nowhere around. But, the ox was very sincerely going round and round. The philosopher was curious. He asked the man how he knows whether the ox was going round or not. The man said that there is a bell in its neck and he listens to its sound. Philosopher asked what would he do if the ox stands in a place and shakes the bell and produces noise. The oil monger coolly said, "It is not educated like you!!"

The oil monger is not an intelligent being after all. But, interestingly is ox is also not intelligent. Thoughts and discussions may raise a humna to heights. They can also throw him into an abyss.

Unnecessary doubts are the hallmarks of thinking people!!

Kanyasulkam of Gurajada

Kanyasulkam is a wonderful drama penned by Sri Gurajada Appa Rao Pantulu garu.
Though it is based on the Sanskrit play Mrichakatikam, you do not even think of it as a clone.
There is so much of originality in it that you forget the similarities!
I read this play whenever I am in blues!!
There is so much slap stick humour in it that you cannot help laughing.
Though the play portraits the Brahmins in poor light, Pantulu Garu is fully justified.

You can download the book for reading pleasure from here

My contribution here is a radio version of this famous paly!

Download the play from here

A write up on the drama for those who do not know about it!

Gurazada wrote this play to raise awareness about what he felt was a scandalous state of affairs in society. His English preface to the first edition states: "Such a scandalous state of things is a disgrace to society, and literature can not have a higher function than to show up such practices and give currency to a high standard of moral ideas. Until reading habits prevail among masses, one must look only to the stage to exert such healthy influence." Traditionally, Telugu literary works were written in a highly stylistic language with complicated words and meter; these works could only be understood by the educated elite. Gurazada's mission was to reach out to the masses, so he broke with tradition (he called the literary dialect "doubly dead" in his preface) and wrote in the vibrant and colorful spoken language of the day.

Madhuravani, the muse of Girisam during the beginning of the play, and that of Ramappa Panthulu in the rest of the play, is portrayed as a very righteous, wise, magnanimous and able woman who is willing to even bend over backwards to help someone in need. This way the play sought to take on the prejudices and practices of contemporary Indian society head-on. The play includes a few gut-wrenching scenes such as one where Agnihothravadhanulu, an egoistic, male-chauvinistic Brahmin and a key player in the play, barbarically slams his food plate onto the face of his young, widowed daughter, when she requests that he reconsider his decision to marry his pre-pubescent daughter to an old man. The practice of parents arranging the marriages of their pre-pubescent daughters to old men for cash was very prevalent during those days, and was referred to popularly as Kanyasulkam, literally meaning "money in lieu for a girl", which also forms the title of the play.

The play also depicts, amusingly, the practices of orthodox Brahmins, such as Madi, with a particular character in the play even shrivelling away from everyone and everything like a touch-me-not, lest he might lose his sanctity. (He even has to perform some "religious cleansing" for the things someone touched before he can touch them.)

The play also has numerous lighter moments, notably regarding the marriage of the stingy old man, Lubdhavadhanulu. Much of that comedy occurs as dialogue between Girisam and his various love interests, and also during the marriage of Lubdhavadhanulu to a boy disguised as a girl. Contemporary Indian society is depicted in a very real fashion, without glorifying it so that it has the effect of being 'in-your-face'. Numerous interesting characters spring up during various points of the play, such as the widowed owner of a local food court, referred to as Pootakoolla 'Munda' (the word in quotes being an offensive word for a widow, originating from 'Mundan', meaning shaving, in Sanskrit and Telugu, because during that period, a woman had to shave her hair off after her husband's death), the debauched and widowed daughter of Lubdhavadhanulu, Meenakshi, and the son of Lubdhavadhanulu. They are very much similar in their notions and prejudices to the people one may see in any Indian village even today.

In Girisam, we can see that kind of a young man who is opportunistic, yearns for momentary pleasures, desires easy money and is unwilling to work, for the simple reason that he is too fickle-minded to hold any particular job for a considerable amount of time. He is so unwilling, in fact, that he wouldn't think twice about taking the easiest path to fulfilling his desires, even if he is trampling upon someone else's life while he is on his way. He claims to be a progressionist, but claiming is all he does. In Meenakshi, we may see a woman who might have been widowed even before she hit puberty. She was therefore paying for a mistake that was anyone's but hers and was being accused of being unfaithful to a husband she did not have. Ramappa Panthulu is a middle man and very incompetent one at that. He tries to twist and turn every situation in his favor, but ends up being entangled in the very much he himself created in the first place. He is a victim of his own making. Probably, Madhuravani and PootaKoolla 'Munda' are the only characters who have strong moral footing and maintain their stand throughout the play. There are no surprises, shocks, or suspense regarding the characters of the persons and flaws in their characters, if any, are laid out clearly by the playwright.

This play was also produced as a film in Telugu.
Great NTR is in lead.
I am sure some bits are available on You tube!!

Let us enjoy great works of creativity!

Vemana on misers

lObhivAni jampa lOkambu lOpala
mandu valadu, vEru matami galadu
paikamDiginanta bhaggun baDi caccu

లోభివాని = a miser
చంప = to kill
లోకంబు లోపల = in this world
మందు = poison
వలదు = not needed
వేరు = different
మతము = opinion
కలదు = is there
పైకము = money
అడిగినంత = as you ask
భగ్గున = flaring
పడి = having fallen
చచ్చు= would die

Vemana makes fun of the miser’s love for money. A miser would love his money more than his life. So, if you want to kill him Vemana says that you don’t have use any medicine, or poison. It is enough if you ask him for money. He would flare up and would fall dead. It is no doubt hyperbole. But, such is the love of a miser for his money.

I am reminded of a story that I heard in my childhood. There were thieves in the house of a miser. They searched the house but could not find the booty. Then they caught hold of the man and started torturing him to tell the place where he kept his riches. As a part of the torture they asked him to sit on burning embers. It appears the miser was ready to do that and was removing his clothing. Thieves were dumb stuck. They asked him what he was up to. The miser said, if the skin is burnt it would grow gain. But, if the clothes are burnt they cannot be recovered. I am sure the thieves must have left the fellow and went to another place looking for their luck. Misers are what they are.

Another story.

A journalist went to interview a rich man. The rich man asked the journalist whether he would record the voice or take notes on paper. The journalist said, he would record the dialogue. “Then I think we shall use the night lamps! Why waste energy with lights when you are not writing anything?” said the rich man. The journalist said “You have already answered many of my questions!”

Vemana, in many poems, expresses his sense of humor. This is one among them!

Dog, Stick and Sufi

Here is a story about the difference between a man and a dog!
Is there anything to learn from this?
It is for you to decide!

The story for those who cannot read Telugu or my handwriting for that matter!!

The Dog, the Stick and the Sufi

A MAN dressed as a Sufi was walking along one day when he saw a dog on the road, which he struck hard with his staff. The dog, yelping with pain, ran to the great sage Abu-Said. Throwing himself at his feet and holding up his injured paw, he called for justice against the Sufi who had maltreated him so cruelly.

The wise one called them together. To the Sufi he said: 'O heedless one! How is it possible for you to treat a dumb animal in this manner. Look at what you have done!'

The Sufi answered: Tar from its being my fault, it is that of the dog. I did not strike him from a mere whim, but for the reason that he had fouled my robe.'

But the dog persisted in his complaint.

Then the peerless one addressed the dog: 'Rather than waiting for the Ultimate Compensation, allow me to give you a compensation for your pain.'

The dog said: 'Great and wise one! When I saw this man garbed as a Sufi, I was able to conclude that he would do me no harm. Had I seen instead a man wearing ordinary dress, I would naturally have given him a wide berth. My real mistake was to assume that the outward appearance of a man of truth indicated safety. If you desire his punishment, take away from him the garment of the Elect.

Deprive him of the costume of the People of Righteousness ...'

The dog himself was of a certain Rank in the Way. It is wrong to believe that a man must be better than he.

Does that make any difference?

The strange case of the missing coaster

We were all sitting around the conference table waiting for another friend to join.
The chair on which I was sitting had one of its coaster wheels missing.
Venkatesh offered to exchange the chair with his!
I said, "As long as I know that one of the wheels is missing, I would not fall down!"
Naturally discussion ensued about missing somethings!!
Arun said "You should write a story about the missing wheel!"
I said"It is indeed a good idea!"

There is no story to tell here.
It is always the same story.
Whether you call it a leaky faucet (to an Indian it is a Nalla or tap) or the chair with the missing wheel, it makes the same meaning after all.

They say the Dharmam in this world should be moving on its four legs and not only the fore legs!!
They also say that these days Dharmam is limping only on one leg!!

It all starts there.
Perfectionists are the enemies of the system.
Mediocrity and compromise are the buzz words in whatever field you look at!!

I still remember the words of Prof. Chintamani Nagesha Ramachandra Rao (CNRRao for short!).
he said we are a country of people who drive a scew with a hammer!
How true!
When I was getting the carpentry work done in my new home, I was invariably reminded of his words!
Yes, the carpenter never used the screwdriver to push the screw.
He simply hammered it in!
Then why use an expensive screw at all?
We can make do with some good nails!
No!
We need screws to feel good that we have bought and used them.
When perhaps I want to dismatle one of those frames, I can never use the same screws because the holes have become much too big!!

I was translating a script of one of those international TV documentaries.
To my horror I read there that an Aeroplane blew away because someone has fixed the wrong screws tad smaller than the intended size!

Pressure cooker leaks because the gasket is not of the right size!
Airconditioner makes horrible noise because someone forgot to check the size of the hole and the pivot that sits in it's blower window!
Iron gets too hot because the thermostat is not properly set!
You construct the house spending crores, but later find that the bathroom stinks just because you are not attemptive and live to the fact!
The man who bought the home in teh next lane was getting the roof repaired because it leaks!
Mind you teh home costed him more than a crore.
People do not work because they are not trained to do the job well!
You name it!
There is a compromise at every step of life!!

That is teh story of the missing coaster!!

Science and Human Values

Prof G V Subrahmanyam Garu was heading Yuva Bharati those days and they were celebrating 20 years of the organisation.
I was a follower of the work of the organisation right from the inception.
It was kind of honour for me when the great Professor asked me to speak at one of the seminar's in connection with the bidecennials.
Couple of speakers sceduled in teh session did not show up!
The session was to end with lunch.
If I speak only for the 15 minutes allotted to me none would be there to partake the lunch and perhaps not many for the post lunch session.

I asked the professor if I could speak for longer.
Professor told it would be a favour!
I spoke nearly for an hour!!
I stopped when I noticed the arrival of the food at the venue!!

I cannot express my joy after the session!
I arrived as a speaker at that level!!
Prof said it was a favour that I did when I thanked him or the chance given!!

Much later they have decided to print the seminar content in a book form.
I said I don't even remember what I spoke.
The Professor was particular that I write the article!!
There was a function got up to release the four books on the seminar!
I remember the book with my article came on to the stage in the last minute right from the press!
I was the reason for that!

Let me confess, I did not exactly know what values meant!
It was Mr. Danish Iqbal, my junior colleague who educated me on the concept!

Here I bring the article for you to read and decide if all the trouble of mine and the professor was worth it!

Explorers and Explorations

This is a lyrical poem I have composed recently after reading one of those Ravindra Sangeet songs!!
The situation really describes a friend, lover who is alone in a rainy loneliness!
I am smitten by this topic of rain!
I have translated a story "Rain" by Friend D. Venkaramayya garu.
It also talks about the effect rain has over people!
Lovely the feelings are!
Some abominable too!

This year interestingly there are enough rains expecting in my place that is Mahabubnagar!!
What could that mean?
Ofcourse, I am not at Mahabubnagar these days!!

C V Raman Letters

I don't want to write anything about these letters!

I will rather write about a person who gave me a chance to read this isuue of Bhavan's Journal!
There is a gentleman (Is he still around?) by name Sri Hari Adiseshu garu.
I knew him from the school days at Mahabubnagar.
He was on the faculty of B. Ed. College there.
Later I met him in Hyderabad and came to know a lot about him.
As is uaual, I am good at making friends with real elderly people, and Adiseshu garu also became one.

He used to visit me frequently at my office.
One day when he came I said "I have to write about Sir C V Raman and do not have any real good material about him."
He went back without any comment.
Perhaps the next morning, he came with a bag full of papers, magazines and stuff.
It contained even the pages from a news paper of the day on which Raman was awarded the Nobel!
This special issue of Bhavan'sournal is the only thing from that collection, that is still with me.
I lost a lot of my precious collection and that should make another story!

Adiseshu garu was an equally mad man like me that he drove away his wife and children from the place since they never liked his books nad collection of nick nacks! I am not being driven away from home by my wife and children yet!

I am a real bad fellow to not to have kept in touch with him!
The last time when I inquired, I was told he was in no position to recognise people.
Kaloji was another person whom I lost like that!
Did I Lose Adiseshu Garu also?

At last the Raman letters!

Let us witness history in it's original form!
