A page from the diary

My goodness! I had ideas about leadership even when I was not exactly teaching it! I was practising it at that point of time. I was reasonably good leader then. This is not just my judgement but many people endorsed the idea. Why then I left that very comfortable job? The question is who was comfortable? Everybody else except me! I never wanted to be a boss! I joined all India Radio, thinking that I will be a producer, doing creative work all through the life. I was having people like Bhradwaja in my view. They enjoyed their job! Of course the official rigmarole makes such people uncomfortable. Then there is compensation in the form of putting your creativity to best use. How many people in this world can throw their ideas on to the world like a media man does?
Then AIR has sucked! It literally chased me away!
Am I happy after that? Yes and No! It depends. If I had stayed there itself, I would have been a very different person. I do not have any complaints about that department even today. It is only people who make or break the institutions.

So, this was the day I chaired the Co-ordination meeting at Vizag. We all went to Simhachalam. I thought I did a mistake to visit a Vaishnavite temple in an official manner and dress. I asked God for some small favour. He never gave it to me! He had different plans for me. I welcomed it! No regrets!
I am used to take life as it comes!

Talking of temples I became aware of some terminology. I commented about the Tamil terms still in use in our households. They are transformed so very much that we ourselves do not recognise the fact that we follow Tamil culture. In fact some of our people hate Tamil and Tamilians.
Funny!

African folk tales

African Folk Tales

I found these stories in an unexpected book. written by genius by name Dr. Tirmala Ramachandra. The book is a collection of his articles on matters of literaturs and related things.

His other book Hampi to Harappa, of course in Telugu is an example of one writes an autobiography. He was a man of many things. A polyglot, journalist, linguist and more than anything a true blue researcher, that was Ramachandra. I don’t know if it would be naive to say that he was a clan man, and his original name was Ramachandra charya. That apart, I have a habit of keeping away from people if I am too very awe struck with their virtuosity. Francis Crick, Veena Balachander are some of the people from whom I kept a distance even though there were occasions to befriend them. Tirumala Ramachandra was another in that list. I have a belief that proximity robs off the element of awe.

Coming to the point, I found a book of articles Sri Ramachandra . it was a collection of articles he has written for various magazines and news papers. I found some very interesting facts and ideas in many articles there. I thought I can make use of some of the material for my blog. When I simply opened the book now, casually to see what is it that I can pick up, I stumbled on an article that I neglected earlier. The article is about African culture. A real polyglot Tirumala studied everything and anything that came his way. Here are a couple of stories that he narrated in the article, word by word.

More about Ramachandra sometime later!

Rabbit - Men

Moon called an insect once and said, “you go to the world of man, and tell thus. ‘I will die. I will live dying. If I die you will also die. You will live dying.’” The insect set on the journey and was going.

Soon a Rabbit accosted it. “Oh! Insect where are you going?” it said. It again asked “On what errand are you going?” “King Moon has sent me. I am going to the man world. I have to convey his message to them.” The insect narrated the matter in detail. “When do you reach man’s world? I can run fast. I will deliver the message to them. You go back!” said the rabbit and even before it could answer fled away.

On the way Rabbit forgot the detail of the message. On reaching man’s world, it met them and said, ‘King Moon sent me. He asked me to tell, “I will die and thus I perish. You will also die and totally perish.”’ It went back to the moon world and narrated the message that it gave to the men.

Moon was very angry. “I did not tell the insect like that! How can you tell something that I did not tell? How dare?” saying so, he threw a stick on to the face of the rabbit. Rabbit’s nose was slit into the middle. Since then only rabbits have a slit nose. But, people however still believe what the rabbit told them.

A page from the diary

9-02-00
I sound very nostalgic and not very much happy with the situations in my musings written long back. There is no better person to invite change than me. I have always been keeping ahead of times. There are not many from my class who are savvy with a computer or internet. This is only an example.
In many things, I have the reputation of being a mixture of both old and new. When Andhra Prabha weekly was looking for an editor with a modern approach, they very much stopped with my name. I remember them saying that Gopal is a man with his heart in the past and mind in the future. My tastes are equally distributes in all the time lines. Classical musicians like many others keep lamenting about the falling standards. I see it as change.
In this entry there are more than one thing to comment upon. On that day perhaps, as usual, I was thinking about many things at once.
I have written about keeping the mind clean.
I have also talked about the milk processing in the past. Yes. Old methods are a favourite subject of mine. No qualms on that.

Akka Kelavva, a haunting melody

Akka kelavva, a haunting melody

I was almost addicted to radio and was used to listening all kinds of things till late in the night. I owe my taste in music and languages to radio!
One night I happened to listen to this song.. I was ignorant about the Vachana Sahitya in Kannada and the information that these Vachanas are sung by great masters. Saivite saints, starting with Basaveswara wrote these Vachanas and they are profusely sung by classical vocalists Akka Mahdevi is another saint who wrote great Vachanas and her works are examples of bridal mysticism. It is a rare thing that free verse poetry existing at that time. They called them Vachanas and not poetry. It is also rare that they are sung to classical ragas. In Telugu there are Vachanams. I don’t know if any musical renditions are there for them.

I was looking for the song everywhere, but could not find it.
This ocean called internet made things easier and I could once again listen to the wonderful rendition of the Vachana by .

Mallikarjuna Mansoor, a master singer of Karnataka who has made Hindustani Music all the more enjoyable.
I was told that he used to ride pillion on bicycle to the Radio station in Dharawad to perform a concert. You look at him, and you will never think that this is the man who can mesmerize people with his song!

I am a life time fan of Mansoorji and the song Akka kelavva.
I can understand a little bit of Kannada no doubt. But, to understand the philosophy of these Vachanas I read a lot about them.
Ultimately it so happened that I had to write a review of a book of translations of Vachanas into my mother tongue, Telugu.
The translation was by a great poet Sri K. Siva Reddy who also happens to be a friend.

Here I bring you the translation.
The original idea appears very simple. But as you understand there is a lot to it that evades our simple imagination. It is a wonderful example of bridal mysticism, I feel.

Literature of any genre has to be understood and enjoyed just like one enjoys a song. If a particular work is available in both forms the enjoyment is much more.
To me, the Vachanas as the word itself means appear nit exactly meant for singing. But the scholars of music having seen the value in them, made them immortal by rendering them musically.

Oh! Sister listen, I have seen a dream
I have seen rice, beetle nut, Beetle leaf, Palmyra leaf and coconut
With little plaits and beautiful teeth,
I have seen the Gorava come home for alms
With exceeding lust i have followed him and took his hand,
After seeing Chenna Mallikarjuna, I have opened my eyes.

Thus goes the translation. But, when I listen to the song, I find that there is redundancy of words in the translated version. I know that the translators were not exactly experts in Kannada. One of them did not even know the language. This translation was done in a workshop where a lot of material was given to them. They have mostly depended on an interpreter. That is how there are differences. I have searched for the Kannada script of this particular item. I failed. The words that I found redundant are kept in parenthesis. I look for some information on the matter.
I am sure people with musical ear will enjoy the song wholeheartedly. Please listen to the song.

Enjoy Great Music!

Runanandalahari of Mullapudi

Happy Deepavali to all!!
Today I bring you selections from Mullapudi Venkata Ramana’s Runanandalahari.
I feel this is the best of humour in modern Telugu.
Can you believe Ramana Garu composing an impeccable poem in classical meter?
He has done it and done it so well that all the classical poets will wonder who is this?
This book under reference is about raising loans and not paying them back. He has adopted a classical style of narration wherein a story leads to another.
I have picked up one poem which is a parody to the famous poem of Potana in Bhagavatam.
The other two are stories in a language style that is not known to many these days.
There are tatacharla Kathalu and other such similar works. The language used in them is not very methodical and is funny in its own way. Read these stories. Unfortunately I cannot help those who cannot read Telugu. This proves that all the vernacular works cannot be translated. I am told that Kanyasulkam is translated. It must be as funny as the original because of the inadequacies in translation. Who can translate this kind of wonderfully native expression?
This sit eh poem! Potana salutes to the omnipotent and omnipresent god in a poem. Ramana Garu request loan from a person who is kind in this poem.

Long ago there was one Appadu. Because there cannot be two, there was one Appadu. He had a rich friend. Because of that he never had money. The friend out of obligation was giving a Varaha ( A coin) in loan. One day Appadu thought why not I ask him to give me a hundred Varahas. And he asked for them. The friend never had so much money and said the same. Since the obligation was also over he did not even give the usual one Varaha. That is the story. Sorry it is not said in as simple words that I could use. The expression is ancient and really interesting. Only those who can understand will enjoy it. Language and its use is as powerful as using ammunition!!

A story no one asked.
It goes thus.
No one asked what is the story. So it was narrated by itself. Fearing that all will ask for loan, a person called Runatilakudu ( all names in this book are related to loan. Appadu is about appu the loan in Telugu.) hid it in a pit in his backyard. It was stolen. Appanna who was denied loan a week back came there and laughed and said, if you gave me a loan, the money would not have been lost I would have repaid it to you, and laughed and went away.
The whole story is narrated in one unbroken sentence. This is an ancient style again. Humour is about not making ugly expression and talking banalities. Humour is something wonderful!

Happy Deepavali again!!

I was alone at home one of these evenings. Usually, I am alone all through the day! So are the evenings!! But, looks like this evening was different. After a long time, I thought, I will write something. Not that I am not writing these days. But this writing was different. I really do not know, if it qualifies to be called poetry! It happened with me. When I wrote poetry, I felt it was prosaic. when I wrote some serious prose, people who matter said, it is poetry!!
This is also like that!! These are my needs these days!! Most of the material on my site and blog happens to be old! A friend has mildly chided me for waht I wrote here on this same blog in one of the entries. I am sure I will not subscribe to many ideas that I had long back!
It happens with every one!

Mullapudi

I really wonder how many people have read it and remember the simple story that made a flimsy plot for the small book. I found this book in one of the pavement stalls selling old books. I read it again after a few decades, and in one spell. No wonder, the book is so small and interesting in very disproportional manner. I bring you a few lines from the same.

Bapu and Ramana are the two persons that all Telugu people should feel proud of. When they were not really involved in making films and concentrated only on making us laugh, we were much better!

This is a page from the inimitable book, “Iddarammayiloo, Muggurabbayiloo” by Mullapoodi Venkata Ramana garu. This is a small book written with only one intention, that is to make the readers laugh. I really wonder what happened to the humour that used to overflow from the Telugu magazines and books. Come Deepavali and every magazine worth the name would come up with special issues. Even Chandamama used to bring out an excellent special with fragrance added to the printing ink.

Mullapoodi and Bapu were the perennial sources of Telugu humour. You can call it slapstick or something else, pure humour just for the sake of a few laughs!!

08 02 2000 A page from the diary

A page from the diary.
Over the years you grow up.
You realise that many things that you have done were senseless.
Can you correct yourself?
I did in this entry.

07 02 2000 A page from the diary

A page from the diary is an honest title. I have written my diaries exactly in this style for a long time. When I saw an old diary, I felt , I can share the ideas with the world. Here comes the series.

04 02 2000 A page from the Diary

3-2-00 Page from the diary

2-2-00 A page from the diary

Alochana lochanalu 3

Silence

If you keep quiet, the whole world will become silent.

You think why it should be like that and start talking; it will end up in a tiff.

Does that mean that being silent is the best way?

When it does not match, however much glue you put, one or the other day, it will break! Isn’t it?

Right from now if you decide not to join it, would not be good?

Suamti Satakam 10

Sumati Stakam 10

mAtaku brANamu satyamu
kOtaku brAnambu subhata kOti dharitrin
bOtiki brANamu mAnamu
chItiki brANambu vrAlu siddhamu sumatI

మాటకు = for an uttering
ప్రాణము = life
సత్యము = truth
కోటకు = for a fort
ప్రాణంబు = life
సుభటకోటి = a collection of good army
ధరిత్రిన్ = on the earth
బోటికి = for a woman
ప్రాణము = life
మానము = chastity or modesty
చీటికి = for a slip or letter
ప్రాణంబు = life
వ్రాలు = the writing or the signature
సిద్ధము = this is ready or true
Oh! The wise one!!

The poet tells us what makes certain things valid and valuable.
He says for an utterance or a spoken word to be valid, it has to be true. He says the truth is the life for the word.
Similarly the life for a fort is the army of good soldiers who can protect it. Only a fort with good protection is a real fort.
A woman is a woman when her modesty is intact. One who is chaste is a respectable woman. In poetic parlance, it is said that this chastity is the life for the woman.
Ultimately the poet says that the life of a letter is the signature affixed on it. A signature gives life to a slip or a letter. It makes it valid. A letter without authentication has no value of its own.

In one poem Baddena has commented on four different things. The four things namely, the uttered word, a fortress, a woman and a letter or as different from each other as chalk from cheese. The four Telugu words anyway rhyme. Has he picked up these things just because they rhyme?
You cannot answer such questions. Poets are said to be without control. Nirankushah Kavayaha!
I get one thing to my mind though. In these days of e- everything, even printed letters and communications do not bear any signature. They even declare that since it is an electronic document it does not need any authentication. An e-mail can be sent with a signature which is not exactly what people knew as signature till recently!!

My musings

Sumati Satakam 9

nammaku sunkari jUdari
nammakumagasalevani, natuvelayalin
nammakumangadi vanini
nammakumI vamahastu navanini sumatI

Don’t believe
One who collects taxes
Gambler
Don’t believe
Goldsmith
అటు = then
వెలయాలిన్ = whore
Shopkeeper
Don’t ever believe
వామహస్తుని = the left handed person
On this earth
Oh! The wise one
This is an interesting poem by Baddena.
He cautions us not to believe certain people.

There is this tax collector, either at the city entrance or even at the burial ground. There are tax collectors in the village to assist the revenue officials. They were there in the olden days. They are there now also. Poet says not to believe them. Poet was upset by the ways of these people and their corrupt practices. So are the people in general. Then there is the person who gambles. One who gambles usually loses money. Then, the habit of gambling like liquor beckons him to come back to the play. He tries to borrow money. He may even tell that by the evening he will win a lot of money and return the investment. It is very likely that he again loses and can never repay. It is a fact that one should not entertain a habitual gambler.

Poet tells us not to believe the goldsmith. This person deals with a valuable material. It is very likely that he cheats people. There are many stories about the ways a goldsmith cheats. There is an interesting saying in Hindi which says that 100 toddy tappers are equal to a broker. 100 brokers are equal to a goldsmith. 100 of them are equal to a village Karanam or the land records man. Thus goes the list.
Poet also says not to believe women who sell herself. Less said about this the better.
Suggestion accepted hands down.

Next in the list of unbelievable people is the shopkeeper. Naturally this person is there to make profit by hook or crook. He will pass off bad material for good. He will jack up prices without reason etc.

The last one in the list is a left hander person. I really could not understand why this.
Are all the left handed people cheats? I don’t think so!

Baddena’s experience must be different.

Another day!

I am told there are five crore blogs on the net as of now.
Half of them are being written by people under twenty.
That is either a proof of the urge of the youngsters to express themselves or the knowledge of what can be done on the net.
Many creative people of my age do not even consider using net for some constructive purpose.
A friend of mine sent me a mail.
It talked about his work on my pages.
I got excited and replied him as I do with all the other mails.
It is months and there is no reaction from that side.
I am sure it is the sons of my friend who found their dad on my pages and sent me a mail.
As such this my friend is just like me. Not much of a PR man.
We keep ourselves shut for long periods and meditate.
This is not the kind of meditation for spiritual purpose.
Thinking about anything and everything has been an excellent pass time for a long time.

All this to tell about me and my blog activity.
I have written columns in news papers.
Every time I sit with papers before me, the biggest question would be why write?
Then it is the subject on which I should be writing.
Even today, my questions are still there before me.
Who cares if you are writing a blog or not?
Still there are people who read such stuff!
Don't they have anything better to do?
They are just like me!
With not much to do!
I will write about things that will be useful to people.
This is a decision and I would stick to it.
More of Telugu will follow.

God of riches Kubera
As friend
యుండియు in spite of being
If you consider
God Siva
భిక్షమెత్తగ వలసెన్ = had to beg
తనవారికి = to one’s own people
ఎంత గలిగిన = however much is there ( wealth)
తనభాగ్యమె = one’s own fortune
తనకుగాక = stays with one
తథ్యము = this is true
Oh! The wise one

In this poem the poet talks about the futility of having rich friends and relatives. It is well known that the rich people are rich only because they don’t share their riches. If they really care about the have nots in their clan or circle and go on helping them, perhaps they will also ending up being on the same level.

As usual poet gives an example. Lord Siva is known for his life style. He has leather as the costume. Snakes are his ornaments. Ashes are his favorite talc. He lives in burial grounds. Interestingly the God of riches Kubera is Siva’s close friend. If Kubera intends, he can make Siva rich. At least, he can see that Siva makes a better appearance before the other gods. But, why would Kubera worry about Siva as long as he is happy with his portfolio. This is only an example. It is not that Siva needs someone’s help to live better. All said and done a good example with the old point of view.

Example aside the fact that rich people never think of making others comfortable remains. This is the fact the poet wants us to understand. There is no meaning in saying I know this man, I am related to that man. You can have rich, famous and powerful people in your circle. If your fortune, destiny is not what you want it to be, you will not have any benefit of being a friend and relative of people. It is your money that you can enjoy.
These days credit cards at some level are making a change. They are making some people rich without riches. You need not be rich and need not be in the circle of rich. It is a false position for some time and will disappear when matters come to an end.

The padyams in Sumati satakam are either a comment on the ways of the world or a piece of advice. This present poem is under the latter kind.
Poet advices us to desist from four things, that we may do without much thinking.

He asks us not to travel alone. In the good old days when there were not many facilities of conveyance, it was either by foot or a horse that people travelled. At best it could have been a cart. In all such cases if one is alone, there is every possibility that when there is a problem, there is no one to lend a helping hand. So, the advice is to travel in groups. In the present adys when one is either in the car or on a two wheeler, it is always advisable that you have company. It only means that the poet’s advice holds good even now.

Next things he cautions us is about not eating in the house of an enemy, even if the enemy shows a lot of friendly nature. It was a time when people were not secure. These days we rarely eat in other’s house and never in an enemy’s house. When you know that somebody is an enemy, we have to be cautious, even when they act like making friends with us.

The next advice is one about good nature. We all pine for money. We want to make money this way or that. In the name of making a quick buck, we may forget that ethics. As it is rightly said, there aren’t any free lunches available. We should work and expect some returns. There could be some other ways of making money. The poet cautions that trying to usurp the money of other people by any way is to be avoided. Naturally when you take other’s money, it is very likely that someone else will try taking it away from you. Hence the advice.

The last thing the poet cautions about is another thing that we may do without knowing what we are doing. We do talk. We talk our heart out without considering whether what we said would hurt the feelings of others, whether present there or away. Poet says we should desist from hurting others with our words. This is the worst thing we always commit and not even be aware that we have done it. This matter needs not much of detailing.

Sumati Satakam 6

వెలయంగా దోకనుండు = it is in the tail
వృశ్చికమునకున్ = for a scorpion

ఖలునకు = for a bad man
నిలువెల్ల = all through the body
విషము = poison
గదరా = isn’t it
సుమతీ = oh wise one

This is a sharp poem condemning the venomous nature of wicked people. Such people indulge in words gestures and thoughts all soaked in venom. Whatever they do will be harmful to the others. There are plenty of such people even in today’s society.

Baddena sharply says only two things here. He compares the bad people with snakes and scorpions. A snake has its venom only in the head and a scorpion in its tail. The other parts of their body are absolutely harmless. It is common knowledge these days that snakes are eaten. For a bad person, there is no localization for the venom. Baddena says that all the parts of the body are as venomous as they could be.

A snake has its venom for only self defence. It is common knowledge that a snake will never bite a person without provocation. Actually the sanke is more afraid of people than the people about the snake. A scorpion is also is similar. Their nature is mis represented by the stories made up by people. A snake being revengeful is a myth. There are people who played with snakes and scorpions all through their lives.
Not so a bad person. Even a simple gesture of the eprson will be full of venom. I feel human beings are the most venomous creatures in this world. thay can torture the fellow beings without killing them. Killing will end the story, whereas a bad word will slowly poison the person and make them suffer whenever they think of it. Humans can cause trouble and thus can be called venomous.

This is an excellent poem typifying the sataka poetry of this genre.

Mother

Mother died. On the seventeenth of the last month that is July 08. I was next to her when she was declared dead by the doctor. All those young nurses were really upset. I was not. I even told them to carry on with what they are supposed to do. There was a young doctor. I told him one of the stories from the series that I translated long ago for Swati Monthly.
I was almost waiting for mother's death. She was suffering. Had she lived further, she would have suffered a lot more. May be, people think that I am worse than the hero in Albert Camus' novel where the fellow is not even aware when his mother died. I am a realist, if there is something like that. I see reality in it's stark naked form. I wanted mother to pass away as dignified as possible. She was a very egoistic person. Never liked to be served by anyone. She has served all without asking questions. She never wanted to be dependent on anyone. She refused to come to any of my brothers till she realised it was almost impossible to be alone. For the last one year she was with me.
I have not really done anything particularly for her. Anyway, my family accomodated her without any complaints. After a few days or months mother realised that she had to live like that. She was very accomodative too. Never too demanding. But as her health started deteriorating, she became fussy and uncomfortable. That is when I wrote that article about death without trouble. It is there on my website.
I am, in a way obsessed with death. I have written and thought about death so much. The stories I have translated were printed in the monthly for 10 months. All those days I was always thinking about death. I discontinued writing them all on my own, even though teh magazine wanted me to continue. Even when I was in the University, I remember reading the encyclopedia on death in detail. It is a three part tome. I remember buying the Tibetan Book of Death.
As a child, I was once caught reading Garuda Puranam. Father as is his style, simply told me not to touch that book again. Why? I did not have the guts to ask. It was connected to death. It describes what happens to the soul after death.
Vakati was another person who would discuss death without getting tired. He even wrote about the topic. He died a little earlier than usual.
Mother's death did not really upset me.
The doctor in ICU who was really next to the mother when she breathed her last, was making the death certificate. That made me think that someone is certifying that mother is dead. Though mentally I was ready for her departure, I was stuck by that certificate. Like the lady in one of the stories by Pirandello, I realised that mother is really dead. I told the same to the doctor. He perahps thought that I am a wierd man.
That was again a moments feelig. I recovered and started calling all the people who must come.
So, mother died. When I told this to a profeassional friend, he asked what I am doing on the occassion. I wrote the customary Charama slokam for teh mother. It is rather unusual. People must have noted it. I neither know Sanskrit so very much and nor am a poet. But, I wrote a Slokam. it may contain soem mistakes. It did not matter. If something has to happen at a particular time, it has to happen. So, I did it. Death does not wait for people to get ready for it. That is the ultimate truth. Death is the ultimate truth. This topic engaged me for ever. It would do so for ever.
I will share my ideas with people like this.

Baddena comments about masters who always look only for the mistakes in people.
This verse sharply tells that one should not serve a man who searches always for mistakes in people. He compares this with a frog living in the shadow of the snake’s hood.

It is always told that one should only look into the good qualities people have. Only then their mistakes even if they are there, would look simple. Forgiving them will also be easy. On the other hand if one is looking for only errors in people, ultimately even if there is a lot of good in them it all will become obscure in the light of all the negativity built up already.

Baddena compares the service of a man who looks for faults with the life of a frog under the snake’s hood. You can never be sure about your security in the situation. You never know when the frog is eaten or the when the man will harm the servant.

Even in the modern management it is clearly told that when the leader or the manager is giving feedback to the staff, initially all positive things should be taken into consideration. Only then the mistakes should be pointed out, so that they can be corrected. Fault finding should be an exercise towards improvement.

One more poem on the vagaries of wealth. Baddena says that wealth comes like the water in the coconut, when it comes. It also disappears equally mysteriously like the contents of wood apple that an elephant has gulped.

This is an interesting poem. Those with a bit of scientific knowledge will question the content of it. But, poets are after all poets. They go by the understanding of the contemporary life.
Anyway, poet describes here the mysterious ways of the wealth. He says, when wealth come, it come s like the water in a coconut. For a common man, the existence of water in the coconut indeed is a mystery. How does the water get there? Even if one explains that it gets there through the roots, it still is a mystery. You never get to see the way it reaches there. Poet means that when money comes it comes in mysterious way. In the present day society, wealth either comes through hard work or some kind of cheating. I really do not know if there is any mystery in it. We can accept that strange are the ways through which money comes.
The second part of the poem is another problem. Poet says that when money goes also it is mysterious. It is indeed mysterious the way rich people gamble and lose money in business or speculation. The simile given here is interesting. Poet says that wealth disappears like the wood apple that is gulped by an elephant. Elephant need not gulp the wood apple as it is. It will crush it and enjoy the contents. It will even digest the fruit and perhaps the shell is not digested. In olden days, there was a belief that when the elephant gulps the wood apple even without crushing, the contents will be digested and empty shell comes out later. I am sure no one checked on this and even the intelligent poet followed the common understanding.
All said and done, we accept that the ways the wealth comes and goes are the strangest.

Sumati Satakam 3

ఎప్పుడు = whenever
సంపదగలిగిన = riches come
అప్పుడు = then
బంధువులు వత్తురు = relatives will come
If you ask how It is
తెప్పలుగ = plentiful
చెరువు నిండిన = if the tank is full (with water)
కప్పలు = frogs
పదివేలు = ten thousand
చేరు = will join

When riches come to you relatives will also come to you. It is like when there are good rains and the tank is full, frogs will appear there in thousands. Another simple fact and the same as in the earlier padyam.
People will not really like you when you are poor. They will even keep distance from you, lest you may ask for some assistance. But when you are rich or you get to become rich, all these relatives who earlier have deserted you will come back to you as if nothing happened.
In all the Satakams, there will be a simple proposition and the same will be illustrated with some worldly phenomenon which is very well known.
Here the matter of relatives coming back is likened to the act of frogs. Frogs leave the tank when it dries up. Biology says that frogs will also dry up and wait till there is water. But, the poet does not take that into account. He simply says that the frogs will come back in thousands when the rains come and the tank is full of water. Frogs are not exactly in love with the tank. What they need is water. They will come when there is water.
Relatives also do not love you if you are poor. They are in love with the money that you have. So, they come to you only when you have money. People! Frog people! That is what the poet means.

Sumati satakam 2

చుట్టములము నీకటంచు = saying that we are your relatives
సొంపు దలిర్పన్‌ = in a beautiful manner
నెట్టుకొని యాశ్రయింతురు come to your umbrage forcefully
గట్టిగ ద్రవ్యంబు గలుగ = when you beget a lot of property
గదరా సుమతీ isn’t it Oh! Wise one!
In Baddean’s Sumati satakam there are quite a few poem that explain the effect of wealth. Here he very simply says that when you acquire a lot of money and material, even those who are not your relatives will come to you against your wishes. They will claim that they are your relatives, per force.
Baddena, to me used the word “nettukoni” which literally means after pushing. If one has to be accepted as a friend or relative, it has to be with the acceptance of both the parties. Here, if you are rich, your acceptance becomes irrelevant. The way people push themselves into your domain, you will, perhaps, not have an option of accepting them.
In Telugu classical poetry there is a rule that the second letters in all the lines of the poem are the same. Cuttamu has a tta. Nettukoni has a tta. Then when the matter of the money has came the word used is not exactly necessary there. Money is not hard (gattiga). Interestingly in English money is sometimes called hard cash if it is cash and not kind, that is material. This is a coincidence. Baddena with this word meant a lot of wealth!
It is simply said here that if you become rich everyone claims that they are related to you. They expect you to share some of your wealth with them. A simple truth!

Sumati Satakam 1

Today I am starting with Sumati Satakam. People have liked the entries on Vemana Satakam. We will resume them after some time. Next few entries will be on Sumati Satakam. Kindly add your comments when you visit the blog. That will tell me where I am heading to and help me do the job better.

Here is the first entry. There is no sequence justification though.

Tana kOpame tana satruvu
Tana sAntame tanaku raksha, daya cuttambou
Tana santOSame swargamu
Tana dukhame narakamandru, taTyamu sumati

తన కోపమె = one’s anger
తన శత్రువు,= is one’s enemy
తన శాంతమె = one’s peace
తనకు రక్ష, = is one’s protection
దయ = mercy
చుట్టంబౌ= will be a relative
తన సంతోషమె = one’s happiness
స్వర్గము,= is heaven
తన దుఃఖమె = one’s sorrow
నరకమండ్రు = is hell, they say
తథ్యము = this is a fact
Oh! The one with good mind! ( The refrain in this Satakam or the hundred verses)

Oh, wise man! The knowledgeable people say that if one is having anger, it will trouble him like an enemy. But if one has a peaceful and tolerant countenance, it will protect him. If one is merciful and takes a sympathetic stand towards people, it will help him like as if it is a relative. If one is happy, there would be a feeling of being in the heaven. On the contrary if one is in sorrowful situation, life will be nothing less than hell.
Baddena, a poet philosopher composed poems in the form of Kanda (a metre in Telugu classical poetry) on the human qualities and virtues as well as vices. To write a good Kanda padyam was considered a great poetic feet. That too if it contains a lot of meaning in those four short lines, it would be a real treat to the reader. The refrain at the end of these verses is “Sumati”. Mati is the mind with the capacity of discrimination. “Su” is a qualifying word which means good. Baddena gave these verses to only those with understanding. A good word is as good as is understood. Music, however wonderful, is useless for a deaf person. Same is the case with good words. Sumati satakam is such a well known work that any Telugu person worth his salt will know at least one poem from it.
In this poem Baddena tells us about the mental status and the effect thereof. These verses hardly need any explanation. That is the beauty of these works. Anger harms. Good feelings will elevate your mood further. Happiness puts you on the top of the world, whereas sorrow throws one into an abyss called sorrow. One has to know how to control these feelings and keep self in good stead.
If we try to comment in detail, any amount of discussion can happen here.
I request friends who visit the blog to add a couple of words themselves about the poem.
Thanks.

ఎంత చదువు చదివి = however much educated
ఎన్నెన్ని విన్నను = however much he listens
హీనుడు = a mean man
అవగుణంబు = lowly characters
మానలేడు = can not stop
బొగ్గుపాల గడుగ = if coal is washed in milk
పోవునా మలినంబు = will the dirt go

However much educated, or listens to people, a bad man can never stop his bad ways. It is like even after washing in milk, coal will not lose its dirty appaerance.

Vemana in this verse refers to the futility of formal education without the the ethics and culture. Eduaction in ancient style is by study and listening to the masters. Even these things will give the right benefit in only the right kind of people, means Vemana. If a person by birth or habit is immersed in bad ways, eduaction of this type can not make him mend his ways.
Vemana comments on two things here. One is education without the completeness i.e. culture. Another is the unchanging ways of bad people.
It is common knowledge that this world has two kinds of bad people. One without education another kind belongs to bad people with education.
You look at all the happenings that appear in news. It is always some well educated people invlved in bad acts and crimes of all sorts. Politics usedto be run by the intelligentsia at one point. Now it is perhaps in the hands of many people who are no doubt educated. By no means all of them can be called good.
In every instance Vemana has a good simily to illustrate the point. Coal is dirty. You can wash it. Not with water but with milk.
Milk is supposed to be purifying even the sinners. Vemana takes a jibe at tradition by taking milk and not water to make the coal clean. Water is an ordinary purifier. Milk is a superior one to water. Vemana hence says, even if washed with milk, coal will not lose its quality of making things dirty when it comes into contact. A bad man creates few more bad people. A good man may not be able to turn people int good people. One only has to look for interpretation of each and every word Vemana uses. Everyt word has a purpose, it appears.

If one wants to comment on what Vemana tells in three lines, one can perhaps write a big book. It is the brevity that gives Vemana the palce that he has in the firmament of litearture.
Being able to tell in fewer words is a skill that is not easily possible.

పదివేలకైనను = even if Ten thousands are offeredవిశ్వదాభిరామ వినురవేమ
It is interesting to see how Vemana denounced the rich and the mighty.
In this verse there is not much of hidden detail to understand. The fact is so simply told that you don’t require any commentary at all. Vemana tells that however much you have served them and struggled during that service, you should not believe the royal class. It is to say that those from the class that is used to being served, there is no habit of remembering the service or being grateful for the service. Vemana compares such association with rich people with living in the company of a snake. A snake is a snake. It takes a bite when it feels like. It does not think about whom it is harming. Similarly a rich person will not reciprocate the goodness just because the person happens to be one who served them at a point of time.
The third line gives the feeling of an incomplete expression. But it is the beauty of poetry where the creator expects the readers to imagine words that he has imagined. Even if a lot of money is offered, the company of a snake is not acceptable. It is not even suggestible. This is what Vemana means by the words in the third line.
There is no royal class, now a days in the society. May be we can attribute the word to the rich people who do not think of being kind to their servants.

This poem is also there in another form. in that instead of toka it is said tolu.
Vemana says that change is not possible easily. He never talks of humans in the verse. To me what he means is that humans are also like the rats skin and wooden statue.
To tell the meaning straight now,
You bring the tail or skin of a rat and wash for an year.
It would remain black and necer turn white.
It is like bringing a wooden doll or statue and hitting it again and again. It would never utter a word.
What Vemana means here is that one should know to what end you are taking the trouble of doing something. Before starting a work you should know the result expected and also the possibility of such a result. If you try to achieve the unachievable, no one can be blamed for the end result or the lack of it.
Trying to change people is also like this effort of making a wooden doll speak. But here, sustained effort may give some result.
There is a lot understand in this poem.

viswadABirAma vinura vEma

This padyam has a different version also. In that version the last line says

UrakunnavAdu uttama yOgira

One who says he does not know or learnt

నెఱజాణ = crafty person

మహిలోన = in this world, in this earth

నేర్తునన్నవాడు = one who saya heknows or has learnt

వార్తకాడు = good at speaking, one who creates news

ఊరకున్నవాడె = one who kept quiet or kept silent

యుత్తమోత్తముడయా = is the best man

This is one of the not so very well known padyams of Vemana.

When I narrated this to a gentleman, he immediately said, it is escapism.

I did not really think there is any escapism in it.

The padyam says, one who claims that he does not know anything is a learned man. It is because, if you say you know, you have to get into a discussion and perhaps a controversy also. It is not exactly maintaning neutrality at the time of crisis, but is pleading ignorance when you know it is not the right place or time.

Vemana says, one who says he knows is only good at talking. VartakAdu is a word which is not in much use in Telugu. In Tamil vArta is a word. Similarly vArta in Telugu is news. Was it like this in Veman's time? I believe it was. Vemana used this word , perhaps for the poetry's sake. Even then it means what exactly it has to. If you are good at creating news or talking, indulge in some discussion!

In the third line which has two versions, Vemana says, one who keeps quiet without saying either he knows, or he does not know, is the best of the best according to the Telugu version used here. The second version adds a quality and calls such a person a Yogi. Yogi is a little superior to the best man.

You know when to say yes, when to sy no, and also when to keep silent. Then you are a Yogi.

If people understand more from this padyam, I heartily welcome them to share their views.

Let me confess, I am not an expert on anything. The kind of response I am seeing makes me indulge in thsees writings.

Vemana

A great king
ఒక = one
అల్పుని = mean person
జేపట్ట = befriends
వానిమాట = his word
చెల్లు = becomes legal tender
వసుధలోన = on the earth
గణకు లొప్పియున్న= if finance people accept
గవ్వలు = cowries
= would they not be legal tender

Another gem of a padyam from Vemana.
He says, if a king takes an unworthy man in to his umbrage and gives him some authority, his words will become law. Here, the capability of the person is not at all considered. To explain the situation Vemana takes an example. There was a time when there were no coins and notes. Cowrie shells were taken as money. Vemana says if the right people accept, even today, would not the cowrie shells be accepted as money?
Vemana makes a wonderful point about the validity of authority. Authority need not exactly be correct. If it has the endorsement of the rulers, or the powers that be, everything becomes authoritative. He mocks at the way the powerful people give authority to unworthy. The system is not very different even today.

Vemana asks an interesting question. In what way is a he buffalo inferior to a bull?
if you get inti the details in this world, will any body call afellow without expertise, a warrior? also asks Vemana.
The name and fame for any person comes based on his work and not the appearance.
A buffalo may look ugly. It is no way inferior to a bull when performance on the feld is considered. Similarly, only one who has exhibited his valour will be called a hero and not any one who lacks the expertise.
Telling some profound facts in a stunning way is the hall mark of Vemana. This verse is an example of the fact. That is the reason why Vemana is known as a great philosopher nad not all the other poets who wrote ordinary poems. This fact also is illustrated in the above commented verse.

If iron is broken the blacksmith will heat it it twice or thrice and can join it.
Will he be able to join the broken heart? asks Vemana.
There are many verses of Vemana which are not very well known.
The initial padyams I tried to comment upon belong to the well known category.
The one given now is not so popular.
Here Vemana talks about broken hearts.
If a physical material like iron is broken, there will be specially experienced people who can join it. A heart if broken, can never be joined again. May be, there is some kind of compromise. But, the memories of teh broken state will remain for ever.
There used to be a very good advertisement regarding a product, Quickfix, which used to say the product will join anything except broken hearts.
There is a similar verse in Mahabharatam which talks about arrows that are struck in the body and heart. There the mention is about the bad words that hit the hearts.
It is a daily experience. Vemana is good at bringing the very known things in a simple but focoseed manners in as few words as possible.

If you take a vessel to milk a barren cow, it will knock your teeth down. It will never yield any milk. Similarly if you ask a miserly person there is no benefit.

Vemana talks about penny pinchers. If a cow is having it's calf and giving milk to it, you can steal some milk from the cow for you also. Then, if the cow is barren, there is no use trying to get milk from it. Similarly if there is a person with some kindness in him and is helping others, you can also expect some help from him. But, if the person is a miser it is impossible to get any help from him. Rather he may even insult you!

Viswadabhirama vinura vema

In the heart
నపరాధములు చేసి = having committed crimes
మంచివానివలెనె = like a good person
మనుజుడుండు = man remains
ఇతరు లెఱుగకున్న= if others know or not
నీశ్వరుడెఱుగడా?= will the God not know?

Vemana questions the people who commit crimes in their hearts.
Such crimes go unnoticed and do not come to be known to the world.
Vemana questions, even if no one knows what you committed in your heart, will the god not know it?
This is about integrity for the present day world.
Integrity is doing the same thing whether anyone notices or not.
Many people who appear like good people may or need not have equally good ides and intentions. Even having such thoughts and ideas is a crime. Vemana says that God wil notice such people.

Chatu ilanu chalada okakati
Viswdabhi rama vinura Vema

A chatu padyam is a verse with a moral, or something to learn from. Vemana when writing his padyams, wanted people to understand the importance of such works.
He says, Neelam ( Blue gem stone) even if it is one, is enough, if it is genuine.
Why a basket full of shining stone which are not of any value?, he questions.
He also asks, A good padyam, even if it is one, is it not enough in this world?

When compared with the first two lines where he tells us the value of a gem stone in comparision with cheap stones, he went silent when it is the matter of Chatu padyam. He said the Padyam is good and desisted from saying the other poetry is waste in comparision.

Yes, if you are wise enough, even one good padyam is enough. You can make good use of it.
All the other poetry may or may not be of any value if seen from learning point of view.

Salt and camphor look alike when looked at.
But when tasted they are very different.
Similarly all people appear alike physically.
But, virtuous and pious people are a different lot. Vemana commented on many things in the contemporary world with unimaginable simplicity and ease. He says that looks are disceptive when people are concerned. A man may look very respectable. It is a question whether his deeds and words are equally respecatable. For this he takes the similarity between the common salt and camphor. They differ in both smell and taste.
Vemana a poet philosopher has given a lot of such gems to the Telugu knowing people.
He is known in every Telugu household. In my generation all people used to know at least a few verses of such scholastic works.
I will try to bring as many verses as possible in the next few days.

Transmission Loss

Power gets lost during the transmission.
Government money gets lost during implementation of programs.
Akbar and Birbal were discussing this matter.
Akbar was doubtful about the fact.
Birbal said, he will demonstrate the matter.
He asked Akbar to ask for some ice.
Yes, Akbar used to arrange for the ice from Himalayas to be brought daily, those days itself.
The ice was brought.
Birbal said, the ice can not be delivered directly to the king.
The man at the gate should take it and give it the next man. He will give in turn to the man sitting next. Almost all of them will touch it. Thus the ice block was broght to the king. By the time it reached there, half the ice was turned to water and everyone's hands were wet.
King laughed at the demonstration.

We are yet to laugh about it.
Because we are made to cry about the situation. What reaches the end point is sometimes not even half of what was meant to be spent on the matter.
By the way there are some who would like this method, because they would get rich easily.

Who am I?

There was this famous doctor.
He was seeing his patients patiently.
A lady entered his chamber.
Doctor in his own style showed her the stool meant for the patient to sit.
The lady did not sit.
She looked at the doctor with contempt and said " Do you know who I am?"
The doctor said" I really don't care. But, if you insist you can occupy two stools!"

Why blogs?

An old lady came to All India Radio.
She wanted that her songs may be included in the daily morning devotional songs programme.
Some how, AIR had an unwritten rule that songs of living authors should not be broadcast.
This poor old lady, it looks, said that she has to die if she wanted her songs to be heard on Radio.
These are the days of Television.
Every one wants to appear on TV.
Even politicians dress up in their best clothes.
When radio was the attraction, it was a craze to be heard on radio.
That is all immaterial but, this old lady was asked why at all she writes songs.
Why write and pine that no one uses them?
She said that songs pour out by themselves. You need not make any effort to write a song.
That is what is creativity all about.
When print, radio, TV are the only media for pouring out your ideas, there is a limitation.
Enter Internet and the scene changed.
You can have your own web pages. You can have your own blog.
You need not even spend a lot to maintain them.
It is all free.
But the question is who is worried about what you bring there?
Who is visting your pages?
Interestingly I find that people look at what you have left on the net.
May not be in droves but people do come to your site and blog.
Then the problem is that you should have some thing there to attract people back again.
There are blogs and more blogs.
Not all are to your liking.
You have some tastes and likings.
You also dislike certain things.
The blog has to get it's identity.
I am struggling to do that, I mean make the blog have an identity.
My site has become popular because of material in Telugu is available there.
I dont want that to happen with my blog.
Only because of this feeling I was not adding any thing here.
Best is the enmy of good said Voltaire.
What should I bring here?

Often talked off, never seen,

Ever coming , never been,

Daily looked for, never here

Still approaching, coming near

When it comes, it becomes today

There is another tomorrow,

always away!!
